The Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) will participate as a partner at Debating Security Plus, the 5th global online brainstorm organised by Friends of Europe from 26 – 28 September 2017.
This brainstorming fits into the work of the WPL Council on Peace & Security Council. WPL, in cooperation with Friends of Europe, is intensifying its efforts to further increase the proportion of female decision-makers in foreign and security policy processes.
According to UN Women, in peace processes between 1992 and 2011, women were only 9% of Negotiatiors; 2% of Chief Mediators, and 4% of Witnesses and Signatories.
Debating Security Plus will be held entirely online and is hosted on a specifically designed platform to help facilitate the participation of thousands from around the world.
Past editions have gathered up to several thousand senior international participants and security experts: civilian and military, journalists, Members of Parliament, representatives of international organisations and civil society.
Recommendations from previous security brainstorms fed into the policy thinking that shaped NATO’s Strategic Concept in 2010 and the EU’s Global Strategy in 2016.
This year, the topics will be:
- how to counter the growth of radicalisation and global terrorism,
- the new challenges posed by hybrid and asymmetric warfare,
- nuclear proliferation,
- cyber defence and deterrence,
- realigning security and defence
- and the impact of climate change on conflict and mass migration.
Members of the European Parliament Marietje Schaake and Ana Gomes are among the featured speakers.
